Waller County is one of the last great rural escapes in the Houston area. Just a short drive down Interstate 10 or US Hwy 290 will bring you through Waller County from Houston. Hempstead is the county seat for Waller County.
Like most Texas counties we have a rich history rooted in both fact and folklore. Named for Edwin Waller, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, the designer of the Austin downtown grid and Austin's first mayor, Waller County was formed in 1873 from parts of Austin and Grimes counties. The area became settled along with parts of Austin and Washington counties in the early 1820's as part of Stephen F. Austin's original 300.
Waller County is very much a rural community with many great events, places to visit and people to meet. Because we are adjacent to the fourth largest city in the country, we offer a great peaceful retreat for those living in and around Houston. Covering a little over 514 square miles, Waller is a relatively small county. Located in the coastal plains of Texas, it has a moderate climate.
Here you can visit a working farm complete with rides and attractions for all ages, tour a real winery, take a ride in vintage aircraft, watch a real county fair, get excited over a good old fashioned destruction derby, and step back in time to the civil war era. These are just a few of the exciting activities waiting for you here. www.co.waller.tx.us
